Write the World Monthly Writing Competitions

Description: A series of monthly, online writing competitions for high school students (ages 13–19), hosted by Write the World. Each month features a different prompt spanning genres like personal essay, flash fiction, poetry, journalism, food writing, songwriting, sci‑fi/fantasy, and more. Participants write to prompts, receive peer/expert feedback, and winners are chosen by guest judges such as youth poets laureate and professional writers.

Dates: Competitions run monthly throughout the year; current and upcoming deadlines are posted on the site. Past examples include June’s “Personal Essay” (June 3–24) and upcoming Flash Fiction (opens August 5, 2024).

Grade Levels: 9–12

Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate (welcomes writers exploring various genres and growing through feedback).

Additional Info: Winners typically receive cash prizes (e.g., $100 first prize, $50 runner-up, $50 best peer review) and publication on the platform; submissions often include an optional expert review phase.
